Wickepin is a small town located in Western Australia, approximately 214 km southeast of Perth. The town, which has a population of around 350 people, is the administrative centre for the Shire of Wickepin.

Indigenous History

The area of land that Wickepin now stands on has a rich Indigenous history. The traditional owners of the land are the Noongar people, who have lived in the Southwest of Western Australia for thousands of years.

The Noongar people have a deep connection to the land and have a unique understanding of the flora, fauna, and environment. They were skilled in bushcraft and used the land to provide food, water, and shelter for their communities.

European Settlement

The first Europeans to come to the Wickepin area were explorers and pastoralists in the early 1800s. In 1830, the Swan River Colony was established, and settlers started to move into the area.

The town of Wickepin was officially gazetted in 1893, and a railway line was built through the town in 1897, connecting it to other towns in the area and Perth.

Like many towns in Western Australia, Wickepin owes its early development to agriculture. The fertile land around the town was perfect for growing crops and grazing livestock, and farmers started to move into the area in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

World War II

During World War II, Wickepin played an important role in supporting the war effort. The town was home to an airfield, which was used by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as a training base for pilots and aircrews.

The airfield was also used by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) as a stopover point for aircraft being flown to the Pacific theatre of the war.

In recent years, Wickepin has continued to grow and develop. The town has a number of community facilities and services, including a hospital, a golf course, and a swimming pool.
